Power Point Installation in Mandurah & Surrounds

Power point installation is one of our daily specialties here at Peel Electrical Service. And when it comes to installing a new power outlet (or moving existing power points to a better location) consulting with an expert in domestic electrical work is highly recommended.

Over years of providing domestic electrical installation services in Mandurah, we’ve gained a wealth of experience in home electrical system design. This means we understand the best spots to install power outlets and how many power points are needed in a room, so your power needs will be met for many years to come.

You may want to install an extra power point to better suit the room, accommodating all your devices and avoiding the risks of overloaded power board and adaptors. Running an extension cord may be a temporary solution, but they aren’t recommended for long term use – if you’re frequently relying on extension cords, adding an extra power point could be a better option.

We’re also the local experts when it comes to outdoor electrical work, including outdoor electrical wiring and outdoor power point installation in Mandurah.

It’s always a good idea to get a licensed electrician to install new power points in your home. Improperly fitted power outlets are a major risk factor for electrical fires, particularly as the years pass and poorly attached wiring comes loose. And if you have any concerns about your existing power outlets, we can replace electrical power points with new, safe outlets.

For peace of mind and security, call on the Peel Region electrician who puts the safety of your family first. We offer a quality guarantee on every electrical installation we perform, so you can have confidence we’ll get the job done right.

How Much Does It Cost To Install A New Power Point In The Peel Region?

Safety Switches & Residual Current Devices (RCDs)

What is an RCD?

An RCD – which stand for Residual Current Device – provides essential protection against electric shock. Similar to a safety switch, these devices monitor the flow of electricity within a circuit. RCD shuts off the supply of electricity when a major fault is detected.

If the amount of electricity flowing into a circuit exceeds the amount leaving, the RCD automatically cuts the electricity supply within 10 to 50 milliseconds of detection. In other words, if electricity is flowing somewhere it shouldn’t be – such as into a metal utensil, an appliance or a person – the RCD immediately springs into action and stops the supply, preventing death by electrocution.

What’s the difference between an RCD and a safety switch?

In practical terms, they’re the same thing. The term ‘RCD’ typically refers to the newest and most up-to-date safety switches on the market. If your safety switches are old, you may want to upgrade your safety switches to newer model RCDs to ensure you have the best possible protection.

Where are my safety switches installed?

They can be installed at individual power points or most commonly at the switchboard. RCDs or safety switches are mandatory in Australia for all new homes, but not all older homes are guaranteed to have safety switches. If safety switches are installed, they may not be protecting every circuit in your home or may not be the right kind of safety switch for the circuit.

Are RCDs / safety switches required by law?

In Western Australia, it’s a legal requirement that at least two safety switches be installed before a home can be leased or sold – on the circuits supplying your power points and lighting. Peel Electrical Service can assist with installing safety switches in your investment property or before putting your home on the market.

For maximum protection, it’s recommended that you install a safety switch on every circuit in your home, including air conditioning, pool pumps, hot water systems and ovens. Anywhere there is an electrical current, there’s the potential for electrocution, and safety switches offer your family the best protection.

Do I need to test my safety switches?

To ensure that the RCD functions correctly, the test button should be pressed every three months. Pushing the test button simulates an earth leakage fault, so you can see if the device operates correctly. Electrical clocks and timing devices may need to be reset after the test button has been pushed and the RCD turned back on.

If your RCD trips or will not reset, please don’t force it: there is either a fault on the circuit or with the RCD. In this case, please contact Peel Electrical Service for an urgent appointment with one of our domestic electricians. If an appliance you need is on the problem circuit, try running an extension cord to another power point until we can sort out the fault for you.

Uncertain if your home has safety switches, or can’t tell where they are on the switchboard? As your friendly local electrician in Mandurah, we’re happy to help you understand your switchboard and identify safety switches. Our licenced electricians can ensure your safety switches are working properly and advise you if it’s a good idea to upgrade or install additional safety switches.

There are also different ratings and types of safety switch on the market, and getting the wrong kind can mean your home isn’t protected. Safety switches with the highest sensitivity are also recommended in home where children live or play.

For your peace of mind and security, it’s a good idea to have your RCD or safety switches inspected by an electrician and address any concerns you have.

Why is my safety switch tripping? Is my safety switch faulty?

First of all, if you have any suspicions that your RCD or safety switch is faulty, you should contact a licensed electrician ASAP. If your safety switch isn’t working, your family may not be protected in case of an accident.

If you experience an unexpected electricity outage, your safety switch may be the culprit. If your power is out and your safety switch is in the ‘off’ or half-off position, something has caused it to trip.

There are many reasons a safety switch can trip:

  • A faulty electrical appliance
  • Rain or water damage
  • Lightning and electrical storms
  • Worn out or damaged wiring
  • Too many appliances running at once
  • A faulty safety switch

In the event of a tripped RCD unplug all power leads associated with this power circuit and reset the RCD. Plug power leads back in one at a time to identify the faulty appliance causing the safety switch to trip.

If the electrical problem persists you should get in touch with a local electrician to help track down the cause.

As the most important electrical safety measure in your home, it’s vital that safety switches are only installed and repaired by a qualified electrical contractor. Attempting to carry out DIY repairs on a safety switch can lead to serious injury or, at the very minimum, an improperly installed safety switch.

RCDs & Safety Switches vs Circuit Breakers

Many people think these are all the same thing, but there are significant differences in how they work and how they contribute to a safe home electrical system.

Circuit breakers are designed to protect the circuitry in your home and prevent electrical fires, but they aren’t meant to protect people from electric shock. If too much current is detected in your wiring, the circuit breaker trips and shuts off the power to avoid overheating.

Essentially, circuit breakers avoid damage to wiring and appliances in case of a power surge or lightning strike, but aren’t designed to prevent electrocution – so it’s essential to install an RCD or safety switch in addition to your circuit breakers.

Unsure if you have safety switches or just circuit breakers installed? Our friendly team is happy to help you identify your safety switches and ensure your home is fully protected.

Home Switchboard Installation

Switchboards can be pretty confusing to look at, so it’s understandable if you can’t tell your circuit breakers from your safety switches. But ensuring your switchboard is in good working order is one of the most important safety measures you can take around the house.

Despite how little people tend to understand them, switchboards play an essential role in keeping your household electrical system running. Like the cockpit of an aeroplane, everything that happens in your domestic electricity system is coordinated here at the switchboard.

Considering how much our technology use has changed over the past 30 years, it’s no wonder that old switchboards have trouble keeping up with our day-to-day electricity needs. Outdated switchboards can even be dangerous when they’re prone to overloading, or you may end up with persistent and annoying circuit breaker trips if your old switchboard can’t cope with the load.

Many older switchboards also don’t comply with modern safety standards, which can increase the risk of electrocution or electrical fires in the home.

Luckily, highly trained and skilled electricians are available to carry out all your domestic switchboard installation and repairs. Peel Electrical Service can help you upgrade your switchboard or replace a faulty switchboard, giving you peace of mind when it comes to the latest safety measures.

Like safety switches, switchboard repairs are something you should never DIY. Attempting to fix a switchboard yourself can be extremely dangerous, and only an electrician can safely work on an electrical switchboard.

Don’t take the risk – call Peel Electrical Service for fast switchboard repairs and new switchboard installation in Mandurah and surrounds. To find out if you need a switchboard upgrade, get in touch with the team at Peel Electrical.
